I'm also a writer with more than 20 years of experience in education and corporate training. I have an MBA and an undergraduate degree in psychology.
For most of the last 20+ years, I taught people the skills they need to move ahead with their careers. I taught for public and private institutions and worked as a manager in corporate America.
I've always found work to be incredibly rewarding. In fact, I loved to work. I would even say I was a workaholic, so much so that work was often the top priority in my life.
I took my work seriously and enjoyed it. Fifty-hour work weeks and working weekends didn't phase me. I accepted the idea that long hours were part of my job.
Then, I burned out. It was too much, I was miserable. I was physically and emotionally exhausted and a stressed-out nervous wreck. I realized I couldn't keep doing what I had been doing. Getting to that mindset was a process, not an overnight decision.
But once I reached that point, I was ready for change. So I quit my full-time job and started writing and occasionally teaching for the nearby community college. My primary goal was to live a more fulfilling life. One that was slower and simpler.
I wanted to work fewer hours and lead a less complicated life, so I set about recreating my life. It took some time - and several challenges along the way - but I finally created a life that works for me.
Today, I'm happier, healthier, and more at peace with myself and my work. I slowed down, and it changed my life for the better. No life is perfect, but mine is more balanced and more liveable. I'm happier with myself and my life in general.
